MOROCCAN GARDENS
Simon Watson captures very unusual and enchanting motifs in his Moroccan Gardens series with tastefully arranged gardens with a great variety of cacti, agaves, palms and bougainvillea. The photographer captures the moving story of a garden in Marrakech and the elegance of a modern garden in Taroudant. Watson’s long history and experience as a travel and landscape photographer is what enables him to capture and immortalize the unique beauty of the cultivated nature. His masterful use of light is an unmistakable feature of his works, it’s something reminiscent of Dutch Old Masters.

Marrakech is one of the four royal cities of Morocco. It is famous for its distinctive oriental ambience and ancient architecture, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site. In addition to the historic old town, there is a special place that fascinates visitors from all over the world: The Jardin Majorelle. The Jardin Majorelle is one of the most extraordinary gardens in the world thanks to its picturesque design and its extensive variety of cacti and agaves.

The French painter Jacques Majorelle’s fascination for Morocco is captured in many of his paintings. He spent most of his life in Marrakech, where he created the now internationally famous garden in 1923. In 1980 the French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent acquired the garden. Within the garden there is even a commemorative plaque dedicated to the revolutionary Parisian haute couture designer, whose inspiration to create was always kept in bloom by the natural beauty of the garden.
