Background Information about Daniel Martinek

Introduction

Daniel Martinek renders the Swiss Alps in soft grays. In his breathtaking series Bernina, he focuses on the awe-inspiring Bernina Range, which reaches heights of over 13,000 feet. Martinek always gets a feel for the area in a helicopter or even on foot. The weather conditions are unpredictable at such perilous altitudes, meaning avalanches and snowstorms are a constant threat. The air becomes thinner and thinner, the nature untamable.

Martinek’s black-and-white photographs depict a mighty mountain range with ridges and crags that date back many millennia. The photographer frames his shots with unbelievable precision, presenting perfect sections of awe-inspiring natural wonder. This gives the giant mountains a timeless, almost sculptural appearance.

The LUMAS artist puts a new twist on a classic subject with an icy clarity sure to work its magic on those fortunate enough to look upon it.
