BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Mystery of the Female & Retro Portraits

You can feel it in your skin: the mysterious and moving atmosphere in the room. Beautiful young women look into the distance expectantly, tender and deep in thought. These are images of powerful emotions, which artist Kristina Varaksina impressively interweaves with a quiet glamour.

The photographer presents the viewers with unexpected worlds of remarkable intensity. With a style reminiscent of still life images, her works offer windows to other epochs. “Retro Portraits”, for example, presents worlds that belong to the past. With an unmistakeable sense for mood and composition, she creates fragmented scenes from daily life. From coffee cups to reading glasses to typewriters, her theatrical images are meticulously arranged down to the finest detail.

In both series, the Russian photographer explores gender clichés and female beauty. While “Retro Portraits” features scenes typical of the 1950s and 1960s, “Mystery of the Female” takes on contemporary stereotypes. The shots appear like amalgams of memory, fantasy, and dreams, and the concepts behind them – sometimes tongue-in-cheek, but always greatly emotional and full of references to art history – is impressive. Between playful and serious, with a touch of melancholy and sensuality, Varaksina is able to master the art of allusion, of the unspoken word.

Having first worked as an art director in Moscow, in 2011 Varaksina decided to study photography in the United States. Since graduating from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, she has lived in New York. Her works have been honoured with a number of awards.
