Daniel Picard’s Superheroes series presents comic book legends as we are not used to seeing them; Superman standing before a lonely beach hut, Batman filling his car with petrol. Set in the context of everyday life, they suddenly appear human and a little silly. Picard takes a modern look at the classic protagonists of American comics, depicting them from a refreshing perspective. There is a similar trend in Hollywood blockbusters to bring these figures out of the realm of the superhuman and reveal their weaknesses and vulnerabilities, making them more real and flawed as characters. In advance of the film Batman v Superman, Picard staged his own graffiti duel, allowing us to revel in the two rivals’ playful mischief.

For these very detailed images, Picard uses his own collection of plastic figurines. The graphic designer and photographer is an avid comic fan; visual references to cinema and pop culture are a constant theme in his work. Just like the major Hollywood studios, he digitally edits images to bring his figures to life in a perfect illusion.

These heroes have a long and storied history. Published around the world since the late 1930s, the modern comic has established itself as one of the first original forms of American art. Characters like Superman and Batman have become pop culture icons, now regularly starring in feature films and, in the form of action figures, adorning children’s rooms and collectors’ cabinets. Picard’s pictures are a sentimental yet satirical homage to the great heroes of this genre.
